Canal House

This staircase connects the upper two floors of a magnificent canal house at the prinsengracht in Amsterdam. There was a simple steel spiral staircase and the owner really wanted to create something special.

During the design process, we found out that the staircase was still too small and we made the steps a bit thicker. The first 3 steps have also been made deeper, creating a bigger appeal. Despite the small space in this 17th century canal house, a large, beautiful staircase has been installed.

The result is a tough industrial staircase of untreated steel with robust steps. The steel ‘Mondrian’ fence goes down the stairs and returns to a balustrade on the top floor.
